Possible reasons for belly fat:

If the belly fat is visceral (embedded among the organs on the inside of the abs) then cutting back on carbohydrates is the best approach, especially fructose since it is especially implicated in liver insulin resistance, and fatty liver disease. Also eliminating oils heavy in polyunsaturated omega 6 fats is relevant since these also contribute to liver insulin resistance. For added benefit, try supplementing with omega 3 oils to help reverse the damage.

If the belly fat is primarily subcutaneous and gathered around the navel then it is possibly related to cortisol. Reduce dietary and lifestyle stressors. Dietary stressors can be gluten or other anti-nutritents in grains, legumes, and dairy. You will also want to avoid over exercising, under sleeping, and over caffeinating as these too are common stress and cortisol triggers.
